NEW YORK (Reuters) - Prescriptions for bupropion, a popular antidepressant that treats depression and anxiety, have been limited by the government for a variety of reasons.
The Food and Drug Administration said some new products in the class, including Zyban, were being made available only on the program's website.
The FDA's review of the Zyban program came in at a point in a trial conducted last week, which also found that the program was not as effective as previously believed.
The drug, which was approved in Europe and is available for free in the U. S., did not meet current standards for safety.
But it was not widely known about in the U. S., where it was first marketed in 1997, and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration did not follow up.
In the first two weeks of January, the FDA's review had found that it was the most effective drug for treating a condition. It was not clear what effect it had on the health of some people.
In the two weeks leading up to the trial, more than 2,300 doctors had tested Zyban for depression, anxiety and other symptoms of depression, such as sadness and hopelessness.
But after three weeks, many people were feeling depressed, anxiety and other symptoms, and many felt the drug did nothing to improve their lives.
The drug was also not effective on smoking cessation, and smokers were less likely to use Zyban than people who were taking antidepressants. But those who stopped smoking also had higher rates of the condition than people who had stopped drinking alcohol.
In the weeks leading up to the study, doctors reported that most people were not depressed or even depressed at all, and about 40 percent had no mood changes, depression or any other symptoms.
